NASANIN NURI

About Me

I got my different tempers from my Persian roots, and my punctualness and professionalism from growing up in Switzerland. My passion for acting pushes all my limits. Born in the sign of Gemini is a reason why I can adapt easily in different characters. I can be the girl next door and be shy and invisible, or I can be the striking brunette with a flirty smile and seducing eyes. And if you do meet me in the gym, I will be punching bags with the boys, and run as fast and lift as hard as they do.

I found out Marilyn Monroe and I were born under the same star when my high school teacher assigned me to do a presentation of her for a Christmas project. My birthday June 1. 1987 was a different date in Iran, the country I was born. Iranians use the lunar calendar for official record keeping, so when my parents sought asylum in Switzerland five years later, my birthdate somehow got lost in translation. My new passport claimed that I was born a week after I was born - on June 8th. My family continued to celebrate my real birthday, and I continued to occasionally find myself in awkward situations at the airport where my ticket had a different date than my passport.

I was 5 years old when my family moved to Switzerland, so I was fortunate enough to start learning Swiss German at a young age. My parents cared a great deal about my family’s education. We spoke Farsi at home, and I could read and write in one language at home before even starting elementary school. Fluent in two languages, my parents hoped I would take this unique skill and become a doctor or lawyer, but those professions never interested me. I wanted to become a famous singer, and spend my days dancing, singing and imitating Britney Spears. At the age of 15, I started taking singing lessons and quickly learned that I photograph better than I sing. I was working at a pharmacy in the small town of Interlaken, and a fashion photographer suggested I try out modeling.

At 21, I won my first pageant, Miss Earth Switzerland 2008. Becoming a public figure in Switzerland was, at first, very overwhelming. I remember how insecure I felt giving interviews, and how much pressure I put on myself to perform properly for the cameras. All of that changed when I went to Manila, Philipines and represented Switzerland at the international level. I placed as a finalist in the top 8. From then on, I landed jobs as a model and brand ambassador for Switzerland, Germany, Italy and France. I dedicated the attention I received to charity and was an ambassador for the Red Cross Switzerland, DAO, a women's refuge organisation in Switzerland, and the Amnesty International Switzerland, to promote Women's rights in the Middle East and speak out against the violence of women all over the world. I helped raise money for the Children's Hospital Zurich and organized a benefit gala against stoning and child executions in the Middle East, where national and international activists, including Nazanin Afshin Jam, attended. I gained a lot of publicity and the Swiss National Television, SRF, produced a documentary about my life called "Nasanin: So Jung, So Schoen, So Traurig," which translates to, "Nasanin: So Young, So Beautiful, So Sad.” The documentary aired on national television in 2009.

I continued working as a model, and in 2010 I landed my first job as a TV entertainment correspondent for the Swiss TV station, Star TV.

I always imagined moving to New York City, before even really knowing what that meant. As a child, I spoke gibberish, pretending to be American, and constantly begged my family to travel to New York. Somehow, without having ever seen any of it in person, I was fascinated by the skyscrapers, Statue of Liberty, and the opportunity New York City had to offer. For as long as I can remember, I had this recurring dream, where I was swimming for so long, exhausted and not sure where I was going, until finally I’d look up and realize I’d swam all the way to New York City. I’d wake up screaming, “I made it! I made it!” I finally left everything in Switzerland behind and made my way to US as an Au Pair. In 2012, with just two suitcases, I moved to San Francisco and lived with a host family. After a year in the states, I began to feel comfortable communicating and expressing myself in English. I extended my job for another year and moved to Long Island, New York. After working for two years as an Au Pair, I was ready to pursue my dream. I moved to New York City and signed up for ESL classes to master my English. As fate would have it, I stumbled upon The William Esper Studio, an acting school that changed my life forever. I was honored to be accepted in Bill Esper's acting class and enrolled in the two year full-time program. As cheesy as it sounds, acting found me! As I studied the art and spent time learning the craft in my classes, I increasingly realized that my entire journey led me to what I really love. Acting is my calling and all I want to do in my life.

At the end of my first year of acting school, I spent the summer of 2016 in Switzerland. I wrote and starred in my first short film entitled “Where Am I”. The film was very well received at the Wellington Film Festival with an honorable mention as it won the “Best Narration” category.

I graduated from The William Esper Studio in summer 2017 and was right away cast as the lead - playing Veronica Hawthorn - in Paul Kyriazi's feature film "Forbidden Power". After we were done shooting "Forbidden Power" in Seattle I traveled to Utah to film an experimental short film that I wrote, produced and starred in. That untitled short film is in the editing phase and expected to be released in 2018.
